DSP medical rules

Back to the A-Z of open employment

Disability Support Pension (DSP) medical rules are one set of rules Centrelink uses to assess if you’re eligible for the DSP.

The DSP medical rules are about your permanent condition that stops you from working. Most people with intellectual disability meet the manifest medical rules. The manifest medical rules say that all people with an intellectual disability with an IQ of less than 70 are eligible for the DSP.

If you don’t meet the manifest medical rules, then Centrelink uses the general medical rules to assess if you can get the DSP. This includes an assessment using the DSP Impairment Tables to look at how your disability might affect your life.

You can learn more about the general medical rules on the Services Australia website.

The other set of rules Centrelink uses to see if you’re eligible are the DSP non-medical rules.

The manifest medical rules for the Disability Support Pension (DSP) are rules about what conditions make you automatically eligible for the DSP.

DSP non-medical rules are the second set of rules Centrelink uses to check if you’re eligible for the Disability Support Pension (DSP). Everyone must meet these rules to be eligible for the DSP.
